BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The Amherst College men's cross country team finished sixth overall ahead of five nationally-ranked programs at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on the Goodman Campus cross country course on Saturday.

The Mammoths, ranked 13th in the nation according to the latest USTFCCCA Division III poll placed sixth with 229 points. Eighteenth-ranked SUNY Geneseo claimed the overall team victory with 75 points while No. 6 NYU finished as the runner up with 89 points. Ninteenth-ranked Tufts placed third overall with 114 points while No. 17 Lynchburg (149 points) and No. 23 Middlebury (181 points) rounded out the top five. 

"The men had a tough day, finishing lower than expected," said head cross country coach Hannah Chappell-Dick. "We are taking this as a wake-up call that the other teams in our region are very strong and that we need to stay vigilant and determined in our goals. Overall, it was a beautiful day for spectators but quite a hot day for a long distance race. It was exciting to get our first test of national-level competition and now we know what we need to work on moving forward. Finally, I'd highlight a strong individual performance that helped set the tone for the day in the open races as Harrison Talcott was our top finisher for the men beating D1 competition."

The 13th-ranked Mammoths will return to action in two weeks, as they travel to the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday, October 19.

MAMMOTH SCORING RUNNERS:

* Sophomore Harrison Dow finished as the top Mammoth placing 23rd overall clocking in a time of 25:11.6 while Henry Dennen finished in 24th producing a time of 25:12.4.

* Senior Nick Edwards-Levin notched a time of 25:28.9 placing 51st while rookie Ben Kasen posted a time of 25:37.4 which was good for 58th.

* Drew Stephens rounded out the top five for the Mammoths placing 75th delivering a time of 25:49.8.
