Box Score

BEVERLY, Mass. – Scoring six or more goals in a matchup for the second time this season, the No. 15 Amherst College field hockey team cruised to a 7-0 victory over non-conference opponent Endicott College Thursday evening at North Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 3-2 on the season, while the Gulls fall to 3-4 overall. The Purple & White return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 when they host archrival Williams College for an 11 a.m. matchup on at Gooding Field, while Endicott next hits the turf on Sept. 24 when they take on Gordon at 12 p.m.

Mary Margaret Stoll '17 tallied the game-winner 6:24 into the outing. Taking advantage of Amherst's third corner of the matchup, Stoll redirected Caroline Fiore '18 shot from the top left of the circle past the Gull netminder.

The Purple & White doubled their lead 12 minutes later as Kendall Codey '19 collected an insertion pass from Mary Grace Cronin '18 at the 18:32 mark and blasted a perfectly placed shot a foot off the ground into the bottom right corner of the goal.

Keeping up the offensive pressure, senior Sara Culhane extended the Amherst lead to three with just under 10 minutes left in the first half as she corralled a blocked shot and slid the ball past the diving Cheka Ventura.

Endicott's best chance of the half came with 9:32 on the clock, with Courtney Brown hitting a ball towards goal. Getting behind a defender on the left side of the net, Sophia Cogliano found the ball and put it on goal, but Emily Horwitz '17 was up to the task and made the save.

Culhane tallied her second score of the game and team-leading fifth of the season with time winding down in the opening half to give Amherst a 4-0 lead heading into intermission. Following a shot from Shannon Tierney '19 and a defensive save from Gull Emily Paladino, Culhane gathered the ball on the left side and sent a shot into a wide-open goal.

The second half featured three more Purple & White goals, with Caroline Feeley '18 making it a 5-0 contest after collecting a highlight reel pass from Fiore at the 42:38 mark and ripping a shot off the blocker of Ventura and into the netting.

Junior Katie Bergamesca scored her first goal of the season with 17:15 remaining to give Amherst a six-goal lead, before first-year Heather Brennan gained positioning in a scrum near the goal and sent the ball into the back of the net to close out the game's scoring four minutes later. The goal marked the first tally of Brennan's collegiate career.
