WORCESTER, Mass. – The Amherst College field hockey team defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 1-0, in an away game this Tuesday.
With this victory, the Mammoths now stand at 3-1 on the season, and will be back to action this Saturday at 11 a.m. in a home game against Middlebury College. Saturday's game will be the Katherine Ryan Breast Cancer Awareness Game, the 50-CO Celebration, and Spirit Day!
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths played an aggressive offensive game, with
Bella Kim and
Devon Watson firing promising shots three minutes and ten minutes into the quarter, both of which were blocked by WPI's goalie.
* Quarter two featured three penalty corners for Watson and shots by
Caroline Busler,
Cate LaFreniere, and
Genevieve Caruso, as the Mammoths looked to get a goal on the board. Quarter three continued in a similar fashion, with Watson drawing two penalty corners in the latter half of the quarter. Caruso, once again, fired a promising shot on the goal that was barely blocked by WPI's goalie with a little over 11 minutes on the clock.
* Amherst did not let up, but the scoreless tie continued as the Mammoths entered quarter four. Aggressive from the start,
Emily Huehn fired a rocket at the goal two minutes in that was just shy of scoring. In fact, the entire quarter took place on the offensive side with
Avery Hadfield, Kim, and
Ella Kang firing a combined nine shots at the goal, six of which were saved by WPI's goalies. The game went into overtime, with the Mammoths having fired sixteen shots, none of which were successful due to WPI's tight goal-keeping.
* After 65 scoreless minutes, Caruso found the gap the Mammoths were looking for, firing in a rebound off an
Emma Zhang shot that soared past WPI's goalie. It was Caruso's third goal of the season.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Amherst drew 12 penalty corners compared to WPI's 4
* Amherst prevented WPI from scoring a single goal, with Grace Pulchalski making a big save in the opening minute of the extra period.
