No. 5 Amherst Uses Strong Second Half to Down Hamilton, 17-7

AMHERST, Mass. – The fifth-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team received one goal, five assist effort from Quinn Moroney '16 and the Purple & White outscored Hamilton College, 7-1 in the second half to help lift Amherst to a 17-7 victory over the Continentals in Saturday's NESCAC contest at Pratt Field.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amherst scored four goals in less than four minutes early in the first quarter as Matt Killian '17 got the stretch started with an unassisted goal at the 13:07 mark.
  • Dylan Park '16 then scored on a feed from Charlie Gill '16, before Connor Crump '16 benefited from a Moroney dish to make it 3-0 at the 10:29 mark. Gill then found the back of the net 40 seconds later to make it 4-0.
  • Hamilton rallied with a man-up goal by J.D. Brachman on a feed from Pat Donahoe at the 7:20 mark, and Donahoe then scored a goal of his won 52 seconds later to cut the Continentals' deficit in half (4-2) after one period of play.
  • In a back-and-forth second frame, Crump fired in a quick goal just 11 seconds into the stanza after receiving a nice pass from Michael Litner '16.
  • Clay McCollum answered for Hamilton with an assist from Eric Zurmuehle, before Brett Inglesby '18 responded with long range goal for the Purple & White with Gill providing the assist on the play.
  • Donahoe then found Sam Sweet who again narrowed the gap to two (6-4) with 10:45 to play, before Amherst used back-to-back markers from Killian and Litner to stake an 8-4 advantage with 7:40 to play. Gill and Moroney registered the helpers on the respective goals.
  • The teams split the next four goals as Donahoe scored an unassisted goal at the 6:23 mark, while Andrew Ford '19 found the back of the cage on a feed from Rob Butko '16 with 5:06 to play. McCollum then capitalized on a Sweet pass with 4:17 to play.
  • Kane Haffey '16 then struck for the first of his four scores aided by another Moroney assist to make it 10-6 with 3:32 remaining in the half – a lead that Amherst took into intermission.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Purple & White began to pull away in the third session as Butko scored with an assist from Ford just 13 ticks into the frame. Chris Albanese '17 then found Inglesby at the 11:43 mark, and a man-up score by Albanese (from Dylan Park) lifted the Amherst advantage to 13-6 with 9:49 to play in the third quarter.
  • Donahoe notched an unassisted goal to momentarily halt the run, but Haffey then scored on a feed from Moroney to make it 14-7 after three periods of action.
  • Moroney found Haffey once more at the 11:38 mark of the fourth stanza, and then scored an unassisted goal of his own to make it 16-7, before Haffey capped the scoring following an assist from Albanese to make it 17-7.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Haffey led Amherst's surge with five shots on goal, while Inglesby and Crump fired three each on target.
  • Ford and Ryan Cassidy '16 led the Purple & White with four ground balls each, while Cody Tranbarger '17 improved to 6-1 between the pipes with 10 saves, including four in the second quarter.
  • Hamilton's Noah Weissmann suffered the loss and made 10 stops, while Eric Zurmuehle was 16-for-27 in faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls.
