No. 14 Field Hockey Edged by No. 12 Tufts, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior goalkeeper Emily Horwitz registered six saves and the Purple & White put six shots on frame, but the No. 14 Amherst field hockey team suffered its third loss of the season Monday night to 12th-ranked Tufts University, 1-0.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • It took just one goal for the Jumbos to secure the win in what was a high-tempo game of evenly matched opponents.  
  • Overall, 22 total shots were taken in the outing, with Tufts holding the advantage 14-8.
  • The Jumbos earned an early opportunity to get on the board, drawing a penalty stroke 2:15 into play. Despite several players vying to clear the loose ball after a shot by Nicole Arata, the ball found the foot of an Amherst defender in front of the net.  Dakota Sikes-Keilp, who leads Tufts with 40 shots on the year, was tabbed to take the stroke, however the shot was sent just wide of the net.
  • Amherst controlled the momentum in the final 15 minutes of the first half, outshooting Tufts 5-0 until the final moments of the period.
  • It appeared as if the game would enter intermission tied, however the Jumbos were awarded a penalty corner opportunity with one second remaining in the half. Taking full advantage, Elle Chrupcala notched her fourth goal of the season and the game winner with no time remaining on the clock, rifling a shot past Horwitz from the top left of the circle.
  • The second half featured 35 minutes of scoreless action with both sides exhibiting strong defensive play. 
  • Gigi Tutoni of the Jumbos nearly doubled the lead with just over seven minutes to play in the game, however Horwitz made a clutch save through traffic for the Purple & White to keep it a one-goal game.
  • Amherst controlled possession during the final five minutes in what was a tenacious push to tie the game, however Tufts was able to hold on for the victory.
  • Tufts held the edge in penalty corners, 8-5
  • Sara Culhane '17 and Elizabeth Turnbull '18 paced the Purple & White in shots on net with three apiece, while Horwitz made six saves between the pipes for Amherst in the outing.
  • Emily Polinski recorded five saves for the Jumbos en route to her third win of the year, while Elle Chrupcala took a game-high six shots in the matchup.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Today's game marks the 17th meeting between the sides since 2000.
  • The series now stands at 9-8 in favor of Tufts over the past 15 seasons with the Jumbos holding the advantage in goal differential 25-19.
