Jeffs Shut Out Middlebury, 7-0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Amherst College football team ran for 252 yards and held Middlebury College scoreless Saturday afternoon for the first time since 2005 as they defeated the Panthers on Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium, 7-0.

The Jeffs are now 23-17 all-time against their rival as they improved to 3-0 on the year. Handing the Panthers their first shutout in 69 games, Middlebury is now 1-2 on the season.

Amherst's defense put on a stellar display, holding the top passing team in the NESCAC to a mere 67 yards through the air. The Jeffs also allowed just 62 yards on the ground as they recorded a commanding 357-to-129 advantage in total offense.

Sophomore tailback Nick Kelly scored the only touchdown of the game on a 59-yard run to start the third quarter. He recorded a career-high 141 yards rushing on 22 carries for an average of 6.4 yards per rush. It was his first 100-yard game of his career. Kenny Adinkra '16 and Raheem Jackson '17 each carried the ball 11 times and added 48 and 35 yards, respectively.  As a team, the Jeffs rushed 65 times for 252 yards.

In the passing game, Alex Berluti '17 and Reece Foy '18 each threw 11 times. Berluti went 5-for-11 with 31 yards and an interception, while Foy finished 7-for-11 with 74 yards and a pick. Gene Garay '15 caught a game-high four balls for 28 yards, while Jackson McGonagle '16 added a game-high 32 yards on three catches. McGonagle also had another great punting game, placing six within the Middlebury-20.

Defensively, Ned Deane '15 lead the squad with eight tackles (4 solo, 4 assists), while Paul Johnson '17 recorded 2.5 sacks. Senior tri-captain and outside linebacker Chris Tamasi tallied seven tackles (3 solo, 4 assists) with three for a loss. The team registered four sacks for a loss of 13 yards.

On the offensive side of the ball for Middlebury, quarterback Matt Milano completed just nine of his 31 attempts for 67 yards, while John Jackson rushed for 37 yards on 12 attempts. Grant Luna led the team with three receptions, but accumulated just 10 yards. Brendan Rankowitz had 25 yards on two catches.

Three Panthers registered double-digit tackles. Leading the way was Matthew Benedict with 20 (14 solo, 6 assists), adding a sack, one break-up and two tackles-for-loss. Tim Patricia added 14 tackles, while Dane Pierce and Addison Pierce added 13 and 11, respectively. As a team, Middlebury recorded four sacks for 18 yards.

Amherst held the Panthers to a three-and-out on the opening drive, including a sack by Johnson on 3rd-and-9 for a loss of two. Starting at their own 34-yard line, the Jeffs recorded four first downs behind several strong runs by Kelly. After a seven-yard rush brought the Jeffs to the Middlebury-6, Amherst missed a 23-yarder to remain scoreless.

The Jeffs put together two more drives of eight and nine plays, respectively, but both defenses remained strong the rest of the half as they entered the break in a 0-0 tie.

On the ensuing kickoff to start the second half, Kelly ran out of bounds at the Amherst 41-yard line for a gain of 28. Following an incomplete pass, the sophomore then rushed to the left side of the field for a 59-yard scamper to the endzone to put the away team ahead, 7-0.

Neither team could put together a solid drive following the touchdown run, including a series of three-and-outs by both squads. Following an incomplete pass on 4th-and-2, Amherst took over at the Panthers' 45-yard line with 3:03 remaining in regulation. On 3rd-and-3, Jackson ran up the middle for three yards and the first down to put the game away as Middlebury was unable to stop the clock.

The Jeffs held a 37:22 to 22:38 lead in time of possession. The teams combined to punt the ball 26 times, as 151 plays were run in the contest. Field position was a big key, as Amherst averaged a start at its own 37, while Middlebury's average start was its own 23.

The Jeffs return to Pratt Field for its next contest on Saturday, Oct. 11 and will host Colby. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
