No. 7 Amherst Cruises to 4-0 Win Over Smith

Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. – Katie Paolano '16 scored once and dished out two assists as the seventh-ranked Amherst College field hockey team won its 10th-consecutive game with a 4-0 non-conference victory Thursday night against Smith College at Gooding Field.

Four different Jeffs scored as Amherst improved to 12-2 overall with its eighth shutout and third straight, while dropping Smith to 4-11.

Madeline Tank '15 recorded an unassisted marker in the first half, and Annika Nygren'16, Ellie Andersen '15 and Paolano all scored in the final 35 minutes of regulation. Emily Horwitz '16 played all 70 minutes in net, registering one save as she improved to 10-0 this year with her fifth shutout.

Despite the loss, Smith goalkeeper Nora Demick was terrific in net. The junior recorded 19 saves, including 12 in the second half, but the stingy Amherst defense allowed just one shot on goal.

Amherst had a great opportunity to take an early lead just six minutes into the game but Tank's shot from directly in front of the net hit the left post. Just a couple minutes later, Demick beat Paolano to the ball to disrupt a pass that saved a potential score and kept the game scoreless.

With 8:01 remaining in the first half, Mary Grace Cronin '18 cut through the defense and sent a shot towards net but Demick's outstretched leg stopped it. However, the ball bounced off her pad right to Tank, who lifted it into the top right corner to put the Jeffs ahead, 1-0.

Amherst wasted no time scoring after the break. Less than two minutes into the second half, Paolano found Nygren towards the right of the post as she sent an insurance tally through the legs of the Pioneers' goalie.

At the 55:58 mark, Paolano brought the ball down the middle of the field and dished it off to Ellie Andersen '15, who fired one on net. The shot deflected off Demick's pads and into the back of the net as Amherst took a 3-0 lead.

Paolano scored her lone goal of the game with 6:48 remaining. Sydney Watts '16 wound up and sent one towards net as Demick made the initial save, but the rebound went to Paolano who flipped it over her shoulder into the top left corner for the four-score lead.

Amherst held a decisive 29-to-2 advantage in shots, without allowing one in the second half. They also recorded 14 penalty corners to Smith's zero.

The Jeffs return to the field Wednesday, Oct. 29 and will host Trinity in their 2014 regular-season finale. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
