Jeffs Shut Out Wesleyan, 4-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Emily Horwitz '17 recorded 10 saves in a shutout win as the seventh-ranked Amherst College field hockey team won its ninth straight game, defeating Little Three rival Wesleyan on the road Saturday, 4-0.

The win marked the seventh shutout of the season for the Jeffs, who improve to 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the NESCAC. With the loss, the Cardinals are now 3-9 on the year and 2-5 in league play.

Amherst received scoring from four different Jeffs. Annika Nygren '16 led the way, scoring a goal and dishing out two assists while sending three shots on goal. Annie Turnbull '16 and her sister Elizabeth Turnbull '18 each scored, as well as Mary Margaret Stoll '17. Elizabeth Turnbull also recorded an assist and Caroline Feeley '18 made a defensive save.

All four Jeff scores occurred in the first half. Nygren found Elizabeth Turnbull just five minutes into the game for the first score. Roughly 11 minutes later, the junior dished out another assist as Margaret Stoll sent one past Wesleyan goalkeeper Claire Edelman to increase the lead to two.

Twenty-five minutes into the game, the visitors tacked on another score as Elizabeth found her sister Annie for the Jeffs' third of the game and just three minutes later, Nygren put Amherst ahead 4-0 on an unassisted marker. 

Neither team found the back of the net in the second half as Amherst held on for the win. The Jeffs claimed a 16-13 edge in shots, with a 15-3 advantage in the first half. They were outshot 10-1 in the final 35 minutes of regulation but Horwitz held strong between the posts for her ninth win of the year. Edelman started for Wesleyan and logged 25:35 minutes, allowing three saves and making six stops. Sara Gundy played the remaining 44:25 in net, recording four saves and allowing one goal.

Amherst returns to Gooding Field for its next contest Thursday, Oct. 23. They will host Smith beginning at 7 p.m.
