THE SERIES
Williams holds the overall advantage over Amherst, winning 67 of 120 matchups dating back to 1884. The Ephs have also won or shared the Little Three Championship 54 times dating back to 1910, compared to Amherst's 37. The home team has won every matchup dating back to 1999, a span in which the winner was decided by an average of just six points. The largest margin of victory came last season, when the Ephs defeated the Jeffs 34-23 at Weston Field. The rivals have gone to overtime only once - Williams defeated Amherst 23-20 in 2001.
SCOUTING AMHERST
The Amherst College football team sits at 5-2 on the season after dropping a game last weekend to perennial powerhouse Trinity College. The Jeffs' top-ranked defense surrendered a season-high 24 points in the loss, giving up 253 yards on the ground. And, Amherst couldn't score against the Bantam defense, and suffered its first shutout loss since Oct. 7, 2000, a 17-0 loss at Middlebury College. Amherst comes into the final game of the season with a very balanced attack, having outscored its opponents 139-53 this season. Amherst has a high-powered offense led by senior quad-captains Nick Kehoe and Mark Hannon. Senior quad-captains Brendan McKee and Mike Salerno lead the smothering Jeff defense.
WILLIAMS head coach MIKE WHALEN
Mike Whalen is in his 11th year at Williams and his third as head coach. He joined Dick Farley's staff in 1996 as the offensive line coach and then assumed offensive coordinator duties in 2001. Whalen posted consecutive 6-2 records his first two years, is 7-0 this season and is 1-1 against Amherst. In the second week of this season, Whalen's Ephs ended Trinity's 31-game win streak, downing the Bantams 41-16 in Williamstown.
Whalen has coached at least one First Team All-NESCAC offensive lineman every year he's been at Williams. He also coached quarterback Joe Reardon, the only player ever named NESCAC Offensive and ECAC-New England Offensive Player of the Year in consecutive years. Whalen graduated from Wesleyan University in 1983, and holds a master's degree in physical education and athletic administration. Prior to coming to Williams, Whalen coached at Wesleyan, Springfield College, the Unversity of Pennsylvania, Lafayette College and Colgate University. He's been nominated for the 2006 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award, and resides in Williamstown with his wife, Karen, and their two sons, Jake (12) and Luke (10).
LAST MEETING
Amherst compounded two decades of Weston Field misfortune with a 34-23 loss, finishing its season at 5-3 and surrendering the coveted Little Three title to Williams (6-2). The Jeffs struggled defensively, as Williams rebounded from an early 7-0 deficit, racked up 488 yards of total offense and outscored Amherst 24-13 in the second half with a punishing ground attack and a pair of quarterbacks – Pat Lucey and Sean Gleeson – who played nearly mistake-free football.
After halftime, Williams racked up 17 unanswered points for a 27-10 edge from which the Jeffs would never recover. Amherst showed signs of life when junior defensive back Mike Salerno made a spectacular one-handed interception near midfield, and classmate Mark Hannon capitalized with a 43-yard touchdown sprint on fourth-and-inches, cutting the deficit to 27-17 with 11:02 left in regulation. Williams answered again with an eight-play, 56-yard scoring drive, as Cory Catelli hit paydirt with a backbreaking three-yard touchdown run.
Junior quarterback Nick Kehoe managed to lead the Jeffs on one final scoring drive, highlighted by a 36-yard heave to sophomore wideout Mike Myers and cemented by Hannon's two-yard jaunt. But the ensuing on-side kick failed, and Williams was content to run out the clock, and Amherst 's season.
AMHERST LAST TIME OUT
Amherst dropped its second game of the season last weekend, a 24-0 loss at Trinity. Amherst used a pass-heavy attack, leaving senior quad-captain quarterback Nick Kehoe free to throw a season-high 44 attempts. Amherst's top-ranked defense surrendered a season high 24 points on 423 total yards, the bulk of which came from the Bantam ground game. The Trinity running corps ran for an amazing 253 yards in the game, while its defense held the Jeffs to -1 total rushing yards.
WILLIAMS LAST TIME OUT
Williams clobbered visiting Little Three opponent Wesleyan University in its homecoming game last weekend, 51-21. The Ephs jumped out to an early 42-7 lead in the first half, as their offense ran wild on the Cardinal defense. Williams quarterback Pat Lucey finished the day with 199 yards through the air and three touchdowns on 11-of-14 passing. The win leaves Williams sitting on top of the conference at 7-0 coming into the final game of the season.
