Amherst College vs. Trinity College
October 31, 2006 * Jessee/Miller Field
Hartford, CT * 12:30 p.m.
THE SERIES
Amherst holds a 54-38-9 series edge over Trinity, but the Bantams have had more success as of late, currently riding a four-game winning streak against the Lord Jeffs. Trinity dominated the first half of the 1990s, winning every match-up from 1990 to 1995, followed by Amherst dominating the late 1990s, winning every match-up from 1996 to 2001. Three of the last Trinity victories over Amherst have been by ten points or fewer, with the only blowout coming in 2004 when the Bantams rolled over the Jeffs at Hitchcock Field, 31-7.
SCOUTING AMHERST
Coming off a decisive 24-6 win over Tufts, Amherst remains tied for second place in the NESCAC with Trinity at 5-1. Leading the charge for Amherst against the Jumbos was first-year running back Aaron Rauh, who rushed for 133 yards on 14 carries, including a long run of 64 yards, to earn NESCAC Rookie of the Week honors. Amherst remains atop the NESCAC standings in scoring defense, allowing just 4.8 points per game. The Lord Jeff offense has also been impressive, with Amherst standing second in the NESCAC in both passing offense (210 yds/gm) and rushing offense (135 yds/gm). Since losing to Middlebury, Amherst has outscored its opponents 85-9 during the current three-game winning streak.
SCOUTING TRINITY
Since being blown out by Williams College in week two of the 2006 season, the Bantams have been unstoppable. Trinity has allowed a combined three points in their last four games, outscoring their opponents 98-3 in that span, including a 34-3 blowout of a very good Middlebury team. The Bantams display the qualities of a well-balanced and complete team, sitting atop the NESCAC standings in pass defense (107.7 yds/gm), rushing offense (161.2 yds/gm), rushing defense (51.8 yds/gm), total defense (159.5 yds/gm), passing defense efficiency (81.5) and turnover margin (+0.83 per game).
LAST MEETING
Despite a career day for quarterback Nick Kehoe, the Amherst College football team suffered a 30-20 loss to the visiting Bantams. Kehoe completed 22-of-43 passes for a then-career-high 323 yards and a trio of touchdowns as the Jeffs fell to 5-2, while Trinity remained undefeated at 7-0, extended the then-longest active winning streak in Division III to 29 games and earned its 500th win in school history. In a match-up expected to be a tight, low-scoring affair, both squads surrendered more yards than either had allowed in a game all season. Trinity's 30 points was just four less than the Jeffs had surrendered for the entire year, while Amherst's 20 points was more than twice as many as the Bantams had given up. Trinity, however, dominated the tempo of the game, posting a 37:35-22:25 time-of-possession advantage and holding a 265 rushing-yard advantage.
