Jeffs Win On Penalty Strokes at Smith, 1-0

NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Amherst College field hockey team outlasted Smith College through two overtimes and emerged victorious after two rounds of penalty strokes on Thursday, 1-0. NESCAC Player of the Week and ECAC Goalie of the Week, junior K.C. Cosentino (Greenwich, CT), stonewalled the host Pioneers for 100 minutes of play, collecting five saves and turning away eight consecutive penalty strokes en route to her second straight shutout.

The momentum shifted from Amherst to Smith in see-saw-type action for 70 minutes before heading to overtime, where the Jeffs dominated both periods, outshooting Smith 8-1. However, Amherst still could not find the net and the game was sent to penalty strokes. Juniors Alicia Pichard (Chevy Chase, MD) and Emma Feinstein (Takoma Park, MD) beat Smith keeper Sydney Siegel to keep the Jeffs alive in the first round and senior co-captain Christine Ryan (Summit, NJ) put home the game-winner in the second round after sitting out all of regulation play. Cosentino was clutch in stopping all five strokes in the second round, including four consecutive stick saves.

Siegel had seven saves in the loss, and collected five of them in a clutch overtime performance. Amherst remains undefeated on the year with a 3-0 mark, while Smith drops to 2-2.

Amherst returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. at NESCAC rival Bates College.
