Jeffs Hammer Wesleyan, 41-0

October 18, 2003

AMHERST, MA - Junior running backs Fletcher Ladd (Amherst, NH) and Matt Monteith (Madison, CT) combined for 322 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 32 carries on Saturday, as the Amherst College football team improved to 4-1 with a convincing 41-0 Homecoming win over visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Wesleyan University. The shutout was the Jeffs' fourth in five games this season and the most lopsided victory in the series since a 58-13 Amherst victory in 1968.

Amherst racked up 17 points in the first quarter, thanks to a 45-yard touchdown run by Ladd, a 21-yard field goal by junior place-kicker David Bodner (Atlantic Beach, NY) and a career-long 78-yard scoring scamper by Monteith. Bodner added another field goal from 29 yards out in the second quarter, and Monteith gave the Jeffs a 27-0 halftime cushion with a five-yard touchdown plunge.

Ladd found the end zone for the second time with a 33-yard run at the star of the third quarter. Later in the fourth, Monteith punctuated the thrashing with a 15-yard touchdown sprint - his team-leading seventh rushing TD of the season - to set the final score at 41-0.

Amherst junior quarterback Marsh Moseley (New Orleans, LA) completed 11 passes to seven different receivers for 144 yards. Fellow junior Jay Wagstaff (Tewksbury, MA) was the main beneficiary with three catches for 35 yards, while senior Jim Devine (Chantilly, VA) and rookie wideout Mark Hannon (Glen Rock, NJ) caught two passes each for a combined 52 yards.

Defensively, the Jeffs held Wesleyan - which entered the game with most prolific aerial attack in the NESCAC - to just 206 passing yards and intercepted senior quarterback Brennan Carney (South Burlington, VT) twice, as senior Paul Whiting (Mission Viejo, CA) and junior Chris Scarpelli (Wyckoff, NJ) each registered picks. Amherst also sacked Carney three times and finished with five sacks overall.

Junior inside linebacker Dave Borgonzi (Everett, MA) paced Amherst's defense with 11 tackles, while senior defensive tackle Mike Harrison (Hanover, MA) added eight, including a sack. Scarpelli and sophomore inside linebacker Justin Roemer (Jupiter, FL) chipped in with eight tackles each.

For Wesleyan, Carney finished 21-for-34 passing for 189 yards before giving way to fellow senior Mosah Fernandez-Goodman (New York, NY) and sophomore Dan McKenna (Longmeadow, MA). Senior tight end Dan Long (Fall River, MA) caught seven passes for 71 yards, while rookie running back Phil Banks (West Haven, CT) paced the Wesleyan ground game with 77 yards on 19 carries. Tri-captain linebacker Tom Moran (Longmeadow, MA) led the defense with a team-high 10 tackles and a forced fumble.
