Jeffs Manhandle Colby, 31-0

October 11, 2003

WATERVILLE, ME - The Amherst College football team posted its third shutout in its first four games, rebounding from last week's 17-14 loss to Middlebury College with a lopsided 31-0 win at NESCAC rival Colby College on Saturday. The Jeffs held Colby to just 123 yards of total offense (56 passing, 67 rushing), sacked senior quarterback B.L. Lippert five times and forced the White Mules into two turnovers, upping their record to 3-1 on the season. Colby dropped to 2-2 with the loss.

Amherst's offense was as dominant as its defense, especially on the ground, where junior Matt Monteith pounded out 132 yards on 11 caries, with touchdown runs of 15 and 63 yards, respectively. Junior tailback Fletcher Ladd added 55 yards on 18 attempts, including a one-yard touchdown plunge. Junior quarterback Marsh Moseley was near perfect, completing 16 of 22 passes for 189 yards, with a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior Jim Devine - his third TD grab of the year - and an 18-yard scoring strike to junior Jay Wagstaff - his first of the season.

The Jeffs held nearly a 13-minute advantage in time of possession, keeping the defense on the sideline for much of the afternoon. Junior inside linebacker Dave Borgonzi and sophomore defensive back Nick Zieler paced the Jeffs with six tackles each. Senior Mike Harrison, junior B.J. Gaddour, and sophomores Gavin Weeks, Kelvin Coker and Justin Roemer each recorded sacks.

Amherst's only negative came on special teams, where Colby blocked three of the Jeffs' four extra point attempts. Amherst also came up short on a two-point conversion attempt.

Amherst returns to action next Saturday at 1 p.m., with a Homecoming matchup against visiting Little Three rival Wesleyan University.
