Jeffs Fall at Little Three Rival Wesleyan, 11-10

MIDDLETOWN, CT - The Amherst College men's lacrosse team fell at Little Three rival Wesleyan University, 11-10, Saturday afternoon. First-year attackman Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NY) paced the Jeffs offensively with a trio of goals and three assists. Senior attackman Harlow Voorhees (Chevy Chase, MD) also tallied three goals, raising his team-leading total to 17 on the season. 

Wesleyan never trailed in the game and led by three goals on two occasions. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the game but Amherst rallied to even the score 3-3 midway through the second quarter. The Cardinals tacked on a trio of goals, taking a 6-4 lead heading into halftime. 

Amherst first-year attackman Bryan Hiller (Wantagh, NY) and senior midfielder Damon Talbott (Springfield, VA) notched the only goals in the third stanza to even the score at 6-6 entering the final quarter. Ian Applegate and Mark Ungar tallied goals for the Cardinals at the start of the fourth quarter, giving the hosts an 8-6 lead. The Jeffs then cut the deficit to 9-8, but Wesleyan countered with goals by Sandy Cole and Chris Walsh to extend the lead to 11-8 with 2:06 remaining. Voorhees and Casertano then netted goals to set the final score at 11-10. With 28 seconds remaining, the visitors won control of the face-off but Wesleyan defender Ed Woo intercepted a pass and cleared the zone in the waning moments. 

First-year goaltender Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) finished with 18 saves for the Jeffs, while Matt Wheeler recorded 13 for Wesleyan. With the loss, Amherst drops to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while the Cardinals improve to 7-4/2-3. 

Amherst returns to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. at NESCAC foe Tufts University.
