M-Lax Remains Undefeated With 16-8 Win at WNEC

April 5, 2001

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Senior co-captain Eric Edelson (Bethesda, MA) scored three goals and added six assists as the Amherst men's lacrosse team remained unbeaten (4-0) with a 16-8 non-conference win at Western New England College (2-4) on Thursday, spoiling the Golden Bears' home opener. Senior Rob Gibson (South Salem, NY) and sophomore Chris Condlin (Baltimore, MD) each found the back of the net three times, while first-year phenom Mike Allison (West Nyack, NY) added three goals and an assist, as the Jeffs placed seven different players in the scoring column.

The win-Amherst's fourth consecutive under rookie head coach Tom Carmean-was particularly sweet, erasing the memory of last year's heartbreaking 8-7 home loss to Western New England. First-year Amherst attack Craig McBeth (Wyckoff, NJ) joined the fun with two goals and an assist, while seniors J.P. Bruneau (Concord, MA) and Mark Cahill each scored to round out the lopsided victory.

Amherst led 5-0 after the opening period and 10-2 at the half behind an 11-save afternoon from senior preseason All-American goalkeeper Corey Simonson (Brookline, MA). Junior reserve Jay Garvey (Watertown, NY) played the last six minutes between the pipes and tallied a pair of saves to remain unscored upon this season.

It was the second straight game in which the Jeffs blanked an opponent in the first period, as they did in an 8-5 win at Bates College on Sunday. In fact, Amherst has outscored opponents 10-1 in the first period over its last three games and 51-33 overall.

The Jeffs will put their unblemished record on the line against NESCAC rival Middlebury College Saturday at Amherst's Hitchcock Field at 2 p.m. The visiting Panthers are ranked seventh in the latest USILA/STX Division III Men's Lacrosse Poll with a 5-1 (2-0 NESCAC) overall record.

Amherst also hosts 1-3 Colby College (0-2 NESCAC) Sunday at 1 p.m.
