For the first time since 1989,the football team has won its Homecoming game! That's right, in Saturday's driving rain, the Lord Jeffs defeated Wesleyan 13-0, meaning the Nov. 11 matchup in Williamstown will be for the Little Three Championship.
The game started with a very bad note. On Amherst's second offensive play, Josh Mason took a pitch and gained seven yards. On the ply, however, he was hit by a number of Cardinal defenders, and one of them fell on his leg, breaking his Fibula. Unfortunately for Amherst, and for Josh, he will miss the rest of the season. The one nice part of the play was that on that carry, Josh broke Amherst's career rushing record. He now has 2431 career rushing yards. Congradulations Josh.
Without the help of Mason, the offense relied on the play of sophomore Dan Milazzo and freshmen Darin Byrne and Bob DiSabato. All three of these backs played well, rushing for 170 yards between them. Quarterback Rich Willard threw the ball well considering how wet the ball must have been. Defensively, the team was led by sophomore Seth Zimmerman, who has played extremely well all season. Zimmerman had 12 tackles, (one for a loss) and two sacks. He leads the team after five games with 55 tackles. Alex Bernstein and Ray Bynres also played well; it seemed that they were in the backfield on almost every play causing havoc for the Wesleyan offense.
