BETHPAGE, NY -- The Amherst College Men's Golf Team, #42 in the nation, competed in the FSC Spring Invitational at the Bethpage Red Golf Course hosted by Farmingdale State. The Mammoths competed in the two-day tournament starting on Saturday April 18th, and completed on Sunday April 19th.
After both days the Mammoths finished in second place, totaling +8 as a team. Babson College placed first, firing +5 as a team, beating the Mammoths by three strokes. In third place, Bowdoin College finished +13 as a team. On the individual leaderboard, sophomore Jan Ebbinge finished in first, firing -3 under par for both days.Â
On day one, the Mammoths began play in the afternoon and began play at 10 AM. After the first day, the Mammoths sat in 3rd place at -1 under par. Babson College finished round one in first place at a total of -8 under par. Following, Bowdoin College sat in 2nd at -3 under par.
On the individual leaderboard for round one, freshman Thomas Zhang led the Mammoths firing a 66, and finished in 2nd place. Zhang had an impressive five birdies and one bogey throughout his round (Bethpage Red Golf Course is a par 70). Zhang finished one shot behind the day one leader from Babson College who shot 65. Following Zhang, sophomore Jan Ebbinge fired an impressive -2 under par for a 68, and sophomore Andre fired a -1 under par for 69. Senior John Beskid shot a 76, and junior Rhys Burgess shot 78. Playing as an individual in the field, senior Mark Vitels shot 75.
On day two, the Mammoths had a morning start at the Bethpage Red Golf Course. The Mammoths played in tricky weather conditions, battling heavy rain and wind. The Mammoths finished Round 2 at +9 over par as a team. Leading the Mammoths, sophomore Jan Ebbinge fired a -1 under par, or 69, with three birdies and an eagle on hole 15, a par 5. Following, junior Rhys Burgess fired 70 (even par). Sophomore Andre Zhang shot 73, senior John Beskid shot 77, and freshman Thomas Zhang shot 79. Playing as an individual, senior Mark Vitels shot a 73, and finished the tournament in 15th place out of 96 players.Â
The Mammoths are back in action this Tuesday, April 21st, for the historic, annual "Little Three Championship." Hosted at The Orchards Golf Club this year, the Mammoth's home course, the Amherst Men's Golf team will compete against Wesleyan and Williams.
