National Marks and Historic Relay Lead Amherst Women at MNESCI

BOSTON, Mass. — The Amherst College women's track and field team delivered a series of record-breaking and national-caliber performances at the New England Small College Invitational (MNESCI) on Sunday. Competing at the Track at New Balance, the Mammoths secured multiple automatic and provisional qualifying marks for the New England DIII Indoor Championships. 

Jumpers and Throws Reach New Heights

First Year Alayah Campbell stole the show in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 5.69m (18-08.00). Her performance set a significant personal best, ranks as the second-best mark in Amherst history, and is currently 8th in the nation, comfortably earning her an auto-qualifying mark. In the shot put, Tess Adams recorded a collegiate best to finish fifth, hitting the automatic qualifying standard.

Relay Victory and School History

The 4x800m relay team (Piper Lentz, Zoe Marcus, Maya Levine, Audrey Seeger) captured first place with a time of 9:20.34. This mark is an auto-qualifying time, the #1 rank in New England, and stands as the fourth-fastest time in Amherst program history. Additionally, the 4x400m relay team earned a second-place finish in their heat and third overall with a time of 4:03.91. 

Distance and Middle Distance Excellence

The distance squad saw a dominant showing in the 5000m and the Mile:

  • 5000m: Ava Thomas won the event in 17:56.27, securing a provisional D3 time. She was followed by Addison McGoey in second (18:16.45) and Allison Lounsbury in fourth (18:31.69), both hitting the provisional qualifying standard. 

  • Mile: Senior Piper Lentz took second place with an auto-qualifying time of 4:58.65, which ranks 16th nationally. Maya Levine finished third with a provisional standard and personal best of 5:06.71. Katie Greenwald (5:08.77), Audrey Seeger (5:13.51), and Maggie Kuchman (5:17.53) all secured provisional qualifying standards. Taylor Gudebski also notched a personal record in the mile (5:24.82). 

  • 800m: Emma Vatnsdal recorded a personal best with a time of 2:31.94. 

Sprints and Hurdles

  • Heloise Hughes won the 200m dash in 25.02 (auto-qualifying time) and qualified for the 60m dash finals with a prelim time of 7.86. 

  • Rachel Hubley ran a nice time in the 200m dash (26.19) and finished fifth in the 60m dash finals (8.04). 

  • 400m: Josie McLaughlin (59.40) and Leila Bata (1:00.44) both hit the provisional qualifying standard. Caroline Wu (1:02.81) and Mads Rabb (1:00.24) both established new indoor personal records in the event. 

  • Hurdles: Anastasia Ioppolo placed third in the 60m hurdles with a personal record of 9.17. 

UP NEXT:
The Mammoths will be at Tufts next weekend for the Tufts 7-Way on February 7. Following that the Mammoths will split up between Boston University and Tufts for the BU Valentine and Tufts Cupid and Multi Meets on February 13-14th.
