BRUNSWICK, Maine – The reigning NESCAC champion Amherst College men's golf team racked up another win on Sunday to cap a stellar weekend at the Bowdoin Invitational. The Mammoths finished tied atop the team leaderboard with archrival Williams and claimed the team title on a tiebreaker.
The team win was the second in three tournaments this fall for the Mammoths and sixth win in the last eight tournaments dating back to last spring. Amherst led the 17-team field after Saturday's first round by shooting a team score of 294 (+6) on the par-72 Brunswick Golf Club. A team score of 299 (+11) on Sunday was just enough to share the top spot on the leaderboard with a two-round score of 593 (+17).
Each team's top four golfers contribute to the team score, but with Amherst and Williams tied atop the leaderboard, the tiebreaker to determine the team champion was the fifth player's score on Sunday. Senior
Paari Kaviyarasu shot a 7-over 79 for Amherst on Sunday, a five-stroke improvement from his Saturday score, and one stroke better than Williams first-year Nick Smith to lift the Mammoths to the team title.
Sophomore
Andre Zhang and first-year
Thomas Zhang (no relation) each shot identical scores on both days of the tournament, carding an even-par 72 on Saturday and a 2-over 74 on Sunday to finish the tournament tied for seventh in the field of 97 golfers with matching scores of 146 (+2).
Andre Zhang drove the green and sunk a 45-foot putt to eagle the par-4 17th hole, his penultimate hole of the tournament, to keep the Mammoths in contention for the win.
The Mammoths were the only team in the field to place four golfers in the top 25. Sophomore
Jan Ebbinge tied for 14th in the tournament with a 1-over 73 on Saturday followed by a 4-over 76 on Sunday to finish with a 149 (+5) and senior
John Beskid carded a 5-over 77 on Saturday before shaving a couple strokes off on Sunday to post a 3-under 75 and finish the tournament tied for 25th place with a 152 (+8).
Western New England sophomore Derek Johnson and Endicott sophomore Myles O'Quinn each shot a 2-under 142 in the tournament to share the top spot on the individual leaderboard.
The Mammoths return to action on October 11-12 for their final tournament of the fall season, the Skidmore Fall Invitational in Saratoga Springs, New York.
