Sommers shoots Mammoths past Mules, 66-64

Box Score AMHERST, Mass. -- Junior Bobby Sommers scored six critical points in the final minutes Friday night as the Amherst College men's basketball team held on to edge Colby College, 66-64, in LeFrak Gymnasium.

The Mammoths improved to 14-9 overall and 5-4 in conference while the Mules fell to 11-12 overall and 3-6 in the NESCAC. Amherst concludes its regular season tomorrow at home for Senior Day against Bowdoin Colllege at 3 p.m.

First-year Marc Garraud led the Mammoths with 14 points. Bobby Sommers added 13 points while C.J. Mitchell and Chris Hammond added 10 each. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths held a 40-33 lead at the break, but Colby whittled that to 42-41 early in the second stanza. A 7-0 run gave the Mammoths some breathing room as Charlie Randall hit a medium turnaround jumper to get it started. Garraud then grabbed a defensive board, race down the court and drained a three-pointer for a six-point Amherst lead. Moments later, Garraud was at it again, driving to the hoop for a deuce that gave Amherst a 49-41 lead with 14:31 remaining in the contest. 

* The Mules came roaring back and took the lead 59-58 with 3:32 remaining after Max Poulton hit 3 of 3 free throws. A pair of Amherst turnovers allowed the Mules to extend their lead to 61-58 before Bobby Sommers drove to the basket for a lay-up with 2"07 remaining to make it a one-point game again. 

* Colby took a 63-60 lead before another Sommers lay-up with 1:26 remaining made the Amherst deficit to one yet again. Amherst forced a pair of Colby turnovers, and with 18.6 seconds left, Sommer drove to the right block and shot a right-handed shot which found the net and gave the Mammoths a 64-63 lead. With six seconds left on the clock, the Mules went to the line with the chance to take the lead but missed both opportunities. C.J. Mitchell grabbed the defensive rebound off the second miss and was fouled. He then made the two ensuing free throws for a 66-63 lead with four ticks to go. 

* With only 0.3 seconds, the Mules went back to the line with three chances to tie but missed the first shot and Amherst held on for the 66-64 victory.

* Amherst shot 45.5 percent from the floor in the opening half, including 7 of 15 (46.7 percent) from beyond the three-point line. 

BY THE NUMBERS: 

* Amherst held Colby to 31.3 percent (20 of 630 shooting from the floor in the game, and outrebounded the Mules, 44-37. 

* Will Scherer led all Mammoths with 8 rebounds. Garraud added 3 rebounds and 3 steals to his 14-point night.
