AMHERST, MA. – Four Mammoths from the Amherst College men's basketball team were accorded College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District honors when they were announced last week: senior guard/forwards
Chris Hammond (Los Angeles, Calif.) and
Drew Martin (West Roxbury, Mass.), junior guard
Marc Garraud (Lynn, Mass.), and sophomore guard
Elias Chin (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).
Formerly known as the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA), the CSC divides the NCAA institutions into nine geographic districts, with Amherst being located in District 1. In order to earn Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must have played in at least 90 percent of their team's contests -- or started in 65 percent of them – during the recently completed season and have maintained at least a 3.5 undergraduate cumulative GPA.
Hammond, a psychology and art double major, earned his third Academic All-District selection with a solid final season. He played in all 27 games and starting 25 while recording 9.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game this year. He also made a huge impact on the defensive side of the ball, racking up a career-high 15 shots and 36 steals. He also garnered a Second Team All-NESCAC selection for his play.
Martin, a math and english double major, earns his second selection after starting 26 of his 27 games played this season. A consummate teammate and hard worker on both sides of the ball, Martin averaged 5.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game and put up five games of 10 or more rebounds this season.
Garraud, a math and psychology double major, gets his second Academic All-District nod after the best season of his Amherst career so far. The junior played in 25 games, starting 11, while averaging 10.2 points, 1.3 assists, and 2.3 rebounds per game. He scored 10-plus points in 17 of 25 games.
Chin, an undeclared major, broke out this season on the way to his first All-District nod. He started 23 of his 26 games played and putting up in 10.6 points, 3.9 assists, and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting .426 from the field. He was an impact player defensively as well, blocking 21 shots as a guard. Chin also earned his first All-NESCAC selection this season.
The Mammoths finished their season with a 19-8 record, including a 7-3 mark in the NESCAC, and earned the No. 4 seed in the NESCAC Tournament. They also made the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection for the first time since 2019, making the Second Round.
