#5 Unbeaten Bantams end Mammoths’ five-game winning streak with 62-49 win

Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. 13 points from C.J. Mitchell and 9 points from Marc Garraud was not enough to drive the Amherst College men's basketball team to victory versus the #5 Trinity College Bantams on Saturday afternoon. In the Ray Oosting Gymnasium, the Bantams won 62-49 versus the Mammoths to continue their impressive form this season.

The Mammoths now stands at 13-8 overall and 4-3 in NESCAC play. On the other hand, Trinity continue their unbeaten record for the season; the Bantams are now 20-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play.

Amherst will be back in action next week. On Friday, February 2nd, Amherst will take on the Connecticut College Camels at Luce Field House in New London, CT. The game will begin at 7pm ET.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
 
  • Trinity were dominant in the first two-and-a-half minutes and took a 7-0 lead before Amherst could get on the scoreboard. Marc Garraud was first to open Amherst's tally with a three-pointer after three minutes.
  • Garraud's three-pointer proved to be just one of two three-pointers for the Mammoths in the first half which was a stark contrast to the Bantams' eight three-pointers throughout the first twenty minutes. The first half ended 39-21 in favor of the home side.
  • In similar fashion to the first half, Trinity started on the front foot and scored twice before Amherst could reduce the deficit. At 55-26 down with 13 minutes left on the clock, the Mammoths enjoyed their most successful patch of basketball in the game and reduced the gap in points to 14 as the score became 57-43 late into the second half. Amherst's shot conversion rates notably improved between the first half and second half.
  • While Amherst finished the game off stronger, Trinity's command during the first thirty or so minutes carried the Bantams to their 20th win of the season. The final score was 49-62.

BY THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Trinity remain the last remaining unbeaten team this season after having played 20 games.
  • The Bantams had Henry Vetter, Jarrel Okorougo, and Ben Callahan-Gold to thank after each of them scored over 10 points throughout the game.
  • Amherst earned more 2nd chance points (12-2) while Trinity were more successful in points off turnovers (35-8)
