AMHERST, Mass. -- Amherst College senior defender
Beth Williamson and junior midfielder
Muffie Mazambani were both named 2nd Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association this afternoon.
In addition, both Williamson and Mazambani were honored by Synapse. Williamson was accorded Synapse First Team All-American honors while Mazambani was selected for Third Team All-American honors. It was Williamson's second NFHCA All-America honor and the second straight year she was a Synapse First Team selection. It was Mazambani's first NFHCA honor and first Synapse honor as well.Â
Williamson, a First Team All-Region selection for the third time in her career, is exceptionally strong on restarts in the backfield, expertly finding gaps in the opponent's defense, and is a strong, solid defender, especially in the circle. The Cos Cob, Connecticut, native is also exceptional off penalty corners and strokes, finishing the season with 5 goals and 6 assists for 16 points. Williamson is also a three-time First Team All-NESCAC selection.
"At sweeper, Beth has been such a powerful and consistent force out of our backfield," said Amherst head coachÂ
Carol Knerr. "She is key to our transition game with exceptional ball speed and accuracy on her passes. She was 4-for-4 on penalty strokes and played a big role in both our offensive and defensive corners. She is a key reason why we had the second lowest goals-against average in the conference."
Mazambani led the Mammoths in goals and points, utilizing her speed and stick skills to finish the season with 13 goals and 5 assists for 31 points. The Harare, Zimbabwe, native was also a force as the flyer when the Mammoths were defending the penalty corners. Mazambani was a Second Team All-Region field hockey selection last year and was named to her second All-NESCAC team as well this year. She also earned All-Region honors in the triple jump for the Amherst track and field team last year.
"At center forward, Muffie led our team and was third in the conference in goals and points," Knerr said. "Her tremendous speed and powerful shot make her a lethal offensive threat. In addition, she is incredibly effective as our flyer on defensive corners and has lightning-fast and accurate inserts on offensive corners, making her valuable both offensively and defensively."
The Mammoths finished this season with a 12-4 overall record, the team's 15th straight season with a winning record, and were ranked 10th in the nation in the final NFHCA Division III Coaches Poll.
