No. 13 Amherst Upsets No. 4 Bowdoin, 5-4 Before Downing Bates, 8-0

AMHERST, Mass. – Sweeping both the Polar Bears and Bobcats in back-to-back conference matches, the Mammoths stayed perfect in NESCAC action, as the No. 13 Amherst College women's tennis team edged No. 4 Bowdoin, 5-4 before downing Bates, 8-0 at the Hampshire Tennis Courts.

With the sweep, Amherst improves to 5-4 overall and to 3-0 in NESCAC play. Bowdoin falls to 9-2 on the season (3-1 NESCAC), while Bates falls to 3-10 overall (1-4 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action on Saturday, April 15 when they travel to archrival Williams for a 1 p.m. league bout. 

BOWDOIN HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 5, Bowdoin 4

  • Solid doubles play proved to be the difference maker for the Mammoths, as Amherst owned a 3-0 lead over the Polar Bears heading into singles action.
  • Doubles duo Camille Smukler '20 and Kelsey Chen '19 bested Joulia Likhanskaia and Samantha Stalder, 8-3 on the first court, while Anya Ivenitsky '20 and Avery Wagman '18 posted a 8-4 win against Tess Trinka and Pilar Giffenig in the second position.
  • Seniors Claire Carpenter and Megan Adamo lifted the Mammoths to the trifecta, downing Sasa Jovanovic and Tasha Christ, 8-5 in the No. 3 spot.
  • In singles competition, Amherst earned wins of the third and fourth court, with Ivenitsky battling past Stalder, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in a hard fought three sets in the third position.
  • Camilla Trapness '19 clinched the win for Amherst, coming from behind to down Christ in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. 

BATES HIGHLIGHTS: Amherst 8, Bates 0

  • In doubles action Chen and Smukler defeated Bella Stone/Maisie Silverman, 8-2 on the first court before the duos of Wagman and Ivenitsky and Carpenter and Adamo both notched 8-4 wins to put the Mammoths up 3-0.
  • Smukler opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Silverman in the top spot on the ladder, while Ivenitsky edged Elizabeth Erbafina, 6-3, 6-0 on the second court.
  • In the third position, Trapness powered past Stone in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9, while Adamo added a victory against Isabelle Rovinski, 6-1, 6-0.
  • Wagman tallied the final win on the day for Amherst on the fifth court, 6-1, 6-0 as sixth court competitors Carpenter and Hannah Londoner were unable to finish their match due the venue closing (6-3, 5-2, unfinished).
