Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – First-year Emilie Flamme registered 14 saves and the Purple & White scored the tying goal with no time remaining on the clock in regulation, but the No. 10 Amherst College field hockey team was unable to power past conference rival Hamilton College, falling 4-3 in overtime at Gooding Field.
With the loss, Amherst's overall record moves to 8-3 and 4-3 in the NESCAC, while Hamilton improves to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in league play. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host Colby College on Senior Day beginning at 11 a.m., while the Continentals return home to play Williams at 5 p.m. on Oct. 11.
Senior Mary Margaret Stoll gave Amherst a 1-0 edge at the 22:05 mark following Sara Culhane '17 dishing a pass to Kendall Codey '19 at the top center of the circle. Driving a ball towards goal, Stoll redirected the shot past Continental netminder Julia Booth.
Nearly doubling their lead with 17:53 on the clock, Heather Brennan '20 gained inside position on a defender to earn a breakaway, however Booth would charge 10 yards outside of the goal and smother the shot attempt.
Coming out strong after intermission, Hamilton logged two quick scores in the opening five minutes. Both goals coming off rebounds after strong initial saves by Flamme, Michaela Giuttari knotted the score at 1-1 2:51 into the second half, while Sarah Stinebaugh gave the Continentals a 2-1 advantage just over a minute later.
Undeterred, Amherst rallied back in the 43rd minute, with offensive pressure leading to the Hamilton goalie covering the ball and a Purple & White penalty stroke being awarded. Tabbed to take the attempt, Caroline Fiore '18 ripped a shot off the pad of the goalie and into the netting.
The Continentals regained the lead at the 54:39 mark, as Eva Rosencrans collected her own rebound in a scrum in front of the net and sent the ball over the goal line.
With 52 seconds remaining in regulation, Amherst was rewarded their second penalty stroke of the game, however Fiore sent the attempt just wide of the net.
Drawing a penalty corner with no time remaining in the game, the Purple & White made the most of the opportunity as Codey's shot once again found the sick of Stoll and deflected past the diving goalkeeper to make it a 3-3 game.
Tatiana Bradley proved to be the difference maker in the matchup, as she gathered Revera's rebound 5:30 into overtime and drove a shot past Flamme who was on the tuft after making the initial save. The score secured the 4-3 overtime victory for the Continentals.
