No. 10 Amherst Notches Two Second Half Goals to Down Conn. College, 2-0

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Heather Brennan '20 and Mary Margaret Stoll '17 each found the back of the net in the second half as the No. 10 Amherst College field hockey team defeated NESCAC rival Connecticut College, 2-0 Wednesday evening at Silflen Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 8-2 on the season and 4-2 in league play, while Conn. College falls to 1-8 overall (1-5 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 when they kick off a three-game home stand by welcoming Hamilton College to Gooding Field for an 11 a.m. conference tilt, while the Camels travel to Bates for a 12 p.m. matchup on Oct. 8.

Both sides came out ready to play as the first half ended with the teams in a scoreless tie and only one shot being taken between the league foes. Jackie Murphy has the best chance of the opening half for Connecticut College, nearly sending a shot from the left side of the arc into in the goal, but first-year goalkeeper Emilie Flamme proved up to the task and made the pad save.

Amherst scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 38th minute as Stoll dished a pass from the left sideline to Laura Schwartzman '20 in the center of the field. Powering a ball towards net from 25 yards out, Brennan got her stick on the drive and redirected the ball past the diving Camel netminder and into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Taking advantage of a corner opportunity, Stoll added an insurance tally at the 60:57 mark. Following several pinpoint passes, Brennan rifled a shot a target, forcing Connecticut College goalie Ryley van der Velde to the turf to make the save. Positioned on the back door of the cage, Stoll collected the rebound and sent the ball over the goal line.
