Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Four players scored in double-figures for the Amherst College men's basketball team as the Jeffs earned a 72-63 non-conference road win Tuesday night against Rhode Island College.
With the win, the Purple & White improve to 15-5 overall while dropping the Anchormen to 14-6 on the year.
Connor Green '16 posted his second consecutive double-double as the junior finished with 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Jeff Racy '17 led Amherst with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond-the-arc, and Jacob Nabatoff '17 and Eric Conklin '17 finished with 10 points apiece. Conklin was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor in 17 minutes and went 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Reid Berman '17 dished out a game-high six assists, while Johnny McCarthy '18 continues to do a little bit of everything. The first-year finished with eight rebounds, seven points and five assists.
Coming off the bench to score a game-high 17 points was Patrick Matthews. He also recorded seven rebounds for Rhode Island College. Joining him in double-figures was Eric Alleyne and Victor Smith with 14 and 10, respectively. Alleyne also registered a team-high four assists.
For the third straight game, Green opened the scoring with a three-pointer off an assist from Berman just seconds after tip-off. Later in the half, Amherst went on an 11-2 run capped off by a lay-up from Conklin as the Jeffs took a 22-11 lead with 10:11 remaining until the break.
The visitor's led by as much as 12 in the opening period but the Anchormen slowly cut into the deficit and a free throw by Matthews with 32 seconds remaining put the home team down four, 30-26. However, Berman responded with two foul shots of his own shortly after as the Purple & White entered the locker room with a 32-26 lead.
Rhode Island College cut the margin to three in the opening minute of the second half, but a three-pointer by Nabatoff followed by a lay-up from George gave Amherst an eight-point advantage. The Jeffs later increased the lead to 14 after another 11-2 run that started with back-to-back treys from Nabatoff and Racy.
Trailing 62-48 with 4:32 to play in regulation, Rhode Island scored eight unanswered over the next two minutes to stay in the game. Shortly after, a jumper by Matthews with 1:05 remaining cut the deficit to four, 65-61. However, a three-pointer by Racy increased the margin to seven as the Jeffs held the Anchormen scoreless the rest of the way, while hitting their free throws to seal the nine-point win.
As a team, Amherst shot 44.6% (20-47) from the floor, 48.0% (12-25) from downtown and 60.6% (20-33) from the charity stripe, while holding Rhode Island College to 35.2% (25-71) shooting from the floor, just 16.7% (3-18) from three-point range and 66.7% (10-15) from the line. The Jeffs held a 15-14 lead in assists, but the Anchormen claimed the rebounding edge, 43-39. In the past three games, Amherst has a combined 38 three-pointers.
The Jeffs return to the court Friday, Feb. 6 and will head to Conn. College for a NESCAC showdown scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
