AMHERST, Mass. Amherst College sophomore Abby Ouimet (Hatfield, MA) scored on a breakaway 3:44 into the first overtime period, as the host Jeffs knocked off arch-rival Williams College, who entered the game with a 10-0 record, in Saturday morning¹s battle of national top-10 teams on Hitchcock Field.
Saturday¹s top-10 battle saw the Jeffs have the better part of play in the opening half, leveling nine shots on the Williams goal, as compared to four Eph attempts. Williams sophomore Monelle Quevillon (Masouche, Quebec) posted five of her game-high seven saves in the opening 35 minutes, however, keeping the game scoreless through halftime.
The second half saw play stay primarily in the midfield, with the two teams combining for only 10 shots on goal in the entire period. After racking up 11 penalty corners in the opening half, the Jeffs managed only three after halftime, while the Ephs earned five of their six for the game to spark an offensive surge. Quevillon¹s counterpart, Amherst junior Beth Sensing (Hockessin, DE) was up to task however, turning away the three Williams shots she saw in regulation to send the game to overtime deadlocked at zero.
In the six-on-six overtime, the Ephs had the early edge before a long ball from the Amherst defensive third found a streaking Ouimet at midfield midway through the 74th minute of the game. Ouimet had a one-on-one on the left wing with the lone Williams defender to beat, and the sophomore put a nifty spin move on the Eph to break back towards the Williams net, setting up her game-winner, a rocket to the left side of the box that Quevillon never had a chance on.
For Ouimet, whose brother Bill helped the WIlliams men's soccer team hold off Amherst in a game that ended just after her game-winner, the heroics are nothing new. After the game-winner early in the second half of the Jeffs¹ huge early-season 2-1 win over Springfield College, the sophomore has racked up goals in each of Amherst¹s last four wins, including the game-winner in the Jeffs¹ dramatic 1-0 win at Middlebury College last Saturday. The sophomore now has a team-high eight goals, second in the league.
With the win, the Jeffs (11-1, 6-1 NESCAC), ranked fifth in the nation in the latest NFHCA poll, snap the Ephs¹ season-opening 10-game winning streak, which had allowed Williams to climb to the number-10 spot in the nation. The win also avenges Williams¹ 3-2 double-overtime win in Williamstown last year, as the Jeffs improve to 7-17-1 all-time against their arch-rivals. Williams (10-1, 6-1 NESCAC) is next in action Tuesday against Connecticut College, while the Jeffs host Tufts University on Senior Day next Wednesday afternoon.
