For the second year in a row, the football team will have a winning record. With yesturday's 28-0 thrashing over Tufts, the team pushed their record to 5-1 and secured a winning record for the season. Against Tufts, the defense played outstanding, while the offense dominated the line of scrimmage.
The defense allowed only 107 yards in total offense, which is the lowest number of yards they have allowed in the 1990's. Karim Hutson had two interceptions, including one that he ran back to the Tufts 9 to set up Amherst's first touchdown. Alex Bernstein destroyed the Tufts offensive tackle. Alex was in the backfield all afternoon and had two sacks along with 7 tackles. Ray Byrnes also had a great day. He had two tackles for losses (one for minus 13 yards) and one sack. It was the defense's second consecutive shutout, a feat Amherst has not done since 1993, when they opened the season with shutout wins over Hamilton and Bowdoin.
Offensively, the Jeffs ran the ball all day long. Dan Milazzo rushed for 135 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Dan Orlando rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns. In total, the team rushed for 289 yards on 64 carries. Matt Murray (a tight end) had 4 catches for 63 yards. Two of his receptions came on third down and kept scoring drives alive. The offensive line dominated, opening holes for the running backs all afternoon long.
Next week, Amhert hosts Trinity. While Trinity is a good team, they are not the team that they were a few years ago, and the team is confident that they can win the game.
