AMHERST, MA – First-year pitcher
Saahi Jetti (Des Moines, Iowa.) was named both the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division III Rookie and Pitcher of the Week, the organization announced yesterday.
This is the second set of awards for Jetti after the first year had one of the best performances of his young career in Saturday's NESCAC Qaurterfinal series against Colby. With his team facing elimination after a series-opening loss on Friday, Jetti hurled a complete game no-hitter to lead his side to a 3-0 win. The win put his record at 8-1 on the season, and he earned it in style, striking out 8 and walking only 3 in the first nine-inning complete game no-hitter by an Amherst pitcher since 2000. The Des Moines native currently leads the NESCAC in wins (8), ERA (2.12), strikeouts (65), complete games (5), and innings pitched (63.2), and is a likely candidate for the NESCAC Rookie of the Year award. Amherst capitalized on the momentum Jetti gave them, winning Game 3 and the series in the final game, 3-2, on a walk off single.
The Mammoths are moving on to NESCAC Championship weekend, which begins tomorrow, Friday, May 9. The advancing teams will face off in a double-elimination tournament, with all games played at Trinity College. The Mammoths will open the weekend against the hosts, with first pitch at 5 p.m.
