Mammoths fall to the Cardinals in a thriller NESCAC semifinal, 4-3

LMIDDLEBURY, VT. — The #18 Amherst College women's tennis team fell to Wesleyan 4–3 in the NESCAC semifinals on Saturday morning at Middlebury College. Amherst won the doubles point and picked up singles wins at No. 1 and No. 2, but Wesleyan came back to take the final four singles matches and advance to the finals. 

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Amherst opened the semifinal the right way by taking two of the three doubles courts. Lily Dounchis and Cody Huang won decisively at No. 1, while Sophie Diop and Greta Stechschulte closed out No. 3 to secure the doubles point for the Mammoths.
  • The singles wins came from the top of the lineup. Tina She battled through a three-setter at No. 1 to give Amherst its first singles point, and Sophie Diop followed with another win at No. 2, keeping Amherst in front early before Wesleyan rallied later in the match.
  • Amherst's other courts had chances but ultimately could not add enough to finish the upset. Cody Huang dropped her match at No. 3, and Greta StechschulteRachel Roth, and Lily Dounchis were unable to turn their courts, allowing Wesleyan to edge ahead and close out the 4–3 result.

3. Lara Afolayanka (W) def. Cody Huang (A), 6–4, 6–1.
4. Mariia Kornilova (W) def. Greta Stechschulte (A), 3–6, 7–6, 6–3.
5. Sarah Youngberg (W) def. Rachel Roth (A), 6–2, 6–4.
6. Natalie Leroy (W) def. Lily Dounchis (A), 6–2, 3–6, 6–4.

UP NEXT

Amherst will wait to hear about NCAA tournament selection on Monday afternoon, when the Mammoths will find out who they will play in the first round of the national tournament.
