AMHERST, MA. — The #18 Amherst College women's tennis team fell to No. 3 Wesleyan 5–2 on Saturday morning at the Amherst Tennis Courts, but the result still showed that Amherst can compete with one of the top teams in the country. Wesleyan entered ranked third nationally, and Amherst responded with a pair of singles wins after dropping the doubles point and most of the early momentum.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Wesleyan opened by taking the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3, Amherst winning on the 1st doubles court. Wesleyan continued to pressure Amherst across the top of the singles lineup. Amherst, though, picked up two strong wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles to avoid the shutout and leave the match with a few bright spots against a highly ranked opponent.
- Tina She delivered one of the day's best results, rallying past Leila Epstein at No. 1 singles after losing the first set 2-6. In the 2nd and 3rd sets, She only dropped two games, winning with the final score of 2–6, 6–1, 6–1.
- Sophie Diop held off Agnes Guggenheim at No. 2 singles in a straight-set battle. After a close 2nd seet, Diop kept her composure to add another win on the board for Amherst. Those wins were Amherst's only points, but they showed the team's ability to compete in the top half of the lineup.
