Mammoths and Ephs tie for Little 3 championship

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Amherst College men's golf yeam hosted the historic, annual Little ThreeChampionship at The Orchards Golf Club, the Mammoth's home course. After a frost delay, the Mammoths began play in the morning against Williams College and Wesleyan College.

For the Little Three tournament, the three teams play 36 holes. For the first 18 holes, the teams compete in pairs of two for alternate shot and match play. For the second 18 holes, the teams compete in match play singles matches. 


For alternate shot and match play, the pairings consisted of:
Freshman Thomas Zhang and sophomore Andre Zhang. The Zhangs won 6 to 4 to Wesleyan, but lost 1 down to Williams.
Senior Mark Vitels and junior Rhys Burgess. Vitels and Burgess won 2 to 1 to Wesleyan, but lost 1 to 2 against Williams. 
Sophomore Jan Ebbinge and junior Leland Tsai. Ebbinge and Tsai won 4 to 3 against Wesleyan, but lost 7 to 6 against Williams.
Finally, senior John Beskid and senior Paari Kaviyarasu. Beskid and Kaviyarasu lost 1 down to Wesleyan, and lost 3 to 4 against Williams. 

After the first 18 holes the results are as follows:
Williams v. Wesleyan: 4-0
Amherst v. Wesleyan: 3-0
Williams v. Amherst: 4-0

After falling behind Williams, the Mammoths came back in the singles matches. 
On the leaderboard, Thomas Zhang won 5 up to Wesleyan, and 2 up to Williams.
Andre Zhang won 7 up to Wesleyan, and 3 up to Williams.
Mark Vitels won 2 up to Wesleyan, but lost 2 down to Williams.
Rhys Burgess won a close match, 4 to 3 against Wesleyan, but lost 2 down to Williams.
Jan Ebbinge also won a close match, 4 to 3 against Wesleyan, and won one up to Wiliams.
Lelang Tsai lost 2 down to Wesleyan, but 1 up to Williams.
John Beskid won a close match, 2 to 1, against Wesleyan, and won 3 up against Williams.
Finally, Paari Kaviyarasu won a 3 to 2 against Wesleyan, and again 3 to 2 against Williams.

After the second 18 holes the results are as follows: 
Williams v. Wesleyan: 6-2
Amherst Wesleyan: 7-1
Amherst v. Williams: 6-2

After 36 holes, Williams and Amherst finished in a tie, with both teams finishing with 10 points. The scores after 36 holes are as follows:
Williams v. Amherst: 6-6
Williams v. Wesleyan: 10-2

Amherst v. Williams: 6-6
Amherst v. Wesleyan: 10-2

Wesleyan v. Williams: 2-10
Wesleyan v. Amherst: 2-10

The Mammoths are back in action this weekend, Friday April 24 to Sunday April 26, for the NESCAC Championship tournament. The Mammoths are competing at the Fox Hopyard Golf Course in East Haddam, CT hosted by Trinity College.
