Fun Day to Be a Mammoth in win over Union

AMHERST, Mass. — The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team delivered a dominant performance on Saturday afternoon, defeating Union College by a 228–64 margin in a dual meet at Pratt Pool.

Amherst will look to carry this momentum forward next weekend as the Mammoths face rival Williams College on Saturday, January 10th. 

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Mammoths set the tone early in the meet, opening with a win in the 200-yard medley relay as the quartet of JP Giglio, Eric Albers, Henry LeCates, and Roan Haney touched first in 1:36.17. Amherst maintained control throughout the afternoon by sweeping multiple individual events and winning both freestyle relays to close the meet.

* First-year Benjamin Robins anchored the distance group for the Mammoths, capturing first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:00.39 before later adding a win in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.41. Sophomore Jack Goepfrich also had a strong day, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.78 and finishing second in the 500 free.

* The Mammoths were especially strong in the backstroke events, led by senior Jonah Luetke, who won both the 100-yard backstroke (52.84) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.21). Senior Ethan Van De Water powered Amherst in the sprint freestyle events, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle (21.72) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.21).

* Amherst also dominated the breaststroke races, as junior Henry Liu swept the 100-yard breaststroke (58.14) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.58). First-year Owen Vale added a pair of victories of his own, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 1:54.87 and finishing second in the 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke.

* In the diving events, sophomore Tyler Palm led the way for Amherst with wins on both boards, scoring 203.70 on the 3-meter and 240.75 on the 1-meter. The meet concluded with another strong relay showing for the Mammoths, as Amherst claimed first and second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the A team closing the meet in a time of 1:25.88.
