WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Amherst College men's swimming and diving team competed in a highly contested dual meet on Saturday afternoon but fell to rival Williams College, 178.5–110.5, at Lasell Pool.
The Mammoths opened the meet with a close finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as the Amherst A team of senior Usim Odim, senior Fyn Nadel, sophomore Cameron Aryanpour, and senior Ethan Van De Water touched second in 1:33.48, just two-tenths of a second behind Williams.
First-year JP Giglio turned in a standout performance in the 200-yard freestyle, tying for first place with Williams' Samuel Brozek as both swimmers posted identical times of 1:43.73. Fellow first-year Owen Vale continued his strong rookie campaign, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 1:53.40 and finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:54.38.
Amherst dominated the breaststroke events, led by junior Henry Liu, who swept both the 100-yard breaststroke (56.92) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:06.33). Junior Eric Albers placed second in both events, while sophomore Joel Chen added a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke.
The Mammoths also shined in the butterfly events, as senior Henry LeCates captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly (51.03) and Aryanpour finished just behind him in second (51.07).
In sprint freestyle action, Van De Water placed third in the 50-yard freestyle (21.68) and fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (47.69), while first-year Roan Haney added a third-place finish in the 100 free.
On the diving boards, first-year Liam Mahoney represented Amherst on the 1-meter board, posting a score of 139.28.
The meet concluded with a strong relay showing, as the Amherst A team of Van De Water, Aryanpour, Haney, and LeCates finished second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:07.14.
Amherst will look to bounce back as the Mammoths continue their season later this month when they face Springfield on Friday, January 23.
