#15 Amherst falls to #17 Colby, 6-3, to head to NESCACs as #6 seeds

AMHERST, MA — The #15 Amherst College men's squash team suffered a tough 6-3 defeat on Tuesday evening against the #17 Colby College Mules at the Davenport Squash Courts. The Mules' road victory extends their winning streak to four matches. 

Up Next: With this loss, Amherst now stands at 9-7 overall and 5-4 in NESCAC play. The Mammoths have now officially qualified for the NESCAC Men's Squash Championship, where they will enter as the #6 seed. The tournament will be held at the George A. Kellner Squash Courts at Trinity College in Hartford, CT, with Amherst set to face the #3 seeds, the the #12 Tufts University Jumbos, on Saturday at 10am. The Mammoths have now qualified for every NESCAC Men's Squash Championship since its inception 17 years ago. Their last semi-final appearance was in 2023. 

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Sophomore Joseph Toth was a standout performer for Amherst, winning in straight sets at the #3 position. His opening set went to an extended 18-16 battle before he claimed the following two sets.
  • First-year Flynn Venmore and senior Matthew Granovsky both pushed their matches to five-set thrillers but ultimately came up just short. Venmore's third set went to a grueling 23-21 before he was edged out in the final two sets. Granovsky narrowly lost 12-10 in the deciding set.
  • First-year Graeme Herbert and junior William Okurowski picked up key wins in the lower half of the lineup. Herbert battled back from a set down to win in four; Okurowski sealed his match with a 12-10 victory in the fourth set.
