Mammoths fall to Wesleyan on the road, 31-21

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, CT..Kevin Agnew's 61-yard interception return for a touchdown briefly gave Amherst College the lead in the second quarter, but the Mammoths ultimately fell to Wesleyan University 31-21 on Saturday at Corwin Stadium at Andrus Field.

The loss dropped Amherst to 4-3 overall and in conference play. Looking ahead, the Mammoths will face Trinity College in an away game next Saturday at 1 p.m.

Marek Hill completed 22 of 43 passes for 228 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions during the game. Senior Carter Jung had a strong performance with 4 receptions for 37 yards and a touchdown, and also rushed for a 3-yard touchdown. Sophomore Christian Moore led all receivers with 5 catches for 77 yards, while junior Keith Delaney added 5 receptions for 56 yards.

Amherst was outgained 277-228 in total yards but held a slight edge in time of possession at 28:20 to 31:40. The Mammoths struggled to convert on third downs, going just 4 of 14, and turned the ball over three times while allowing blocked punt for a touchdown and a safety.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* Wesleyan struck first on a 10-play, 42-yard drive capped by Matt Fitzsimons' 4-yard touchdown pass to Blake Newcomb with 13:25 remaining in the second quarter. Gage Hammond's extra point gave the Cardinals a 7-0 lead.

* The Mammoths answered quickly with a 6-play, 75-yard drive. Jung rushed in from 3 yards out with 9:57 left in the half. Hudson Fulcher-Melendy's extra point tied the game at 7-7.


* Just 1:43 later, Amherst took its first lead when Hill connected with Jung on a 21-yard touchdown pass. Fulcher-Melendy's kick made it 14-7 with 8:14 remaining in the half.


* Wesleyan closed the gap when Amherst was called for a safety with 5:38 left in the second quarter, cutting the lead to 14-9.


* The Cardinals regained the lead on a 4-play, 56-yard drive, with Fitzsimons rushing in from 4 yards out. A successful two-point conversion gave Wesleyan a 17-14 advantage with 3:48 remaining in the half.


* Agnew gave Amherst a 21-17 halftime lead when he intercepted Fitzsimons and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown with 31 seconds left in the half.


* Wesleyan took control in the third quarter with two quick scores. Fitzsimons found Jake Saalfrank for a 22-yard touchdown pass at the 9:36 mark, then Dylan Connors returned a blocked punt 11 yards for a touchdown at 7:54, giving the Cardinals a 31-21 lead they would not relinquish.


* Amherst drove to the Wesleyan 37-yard line on their final possession but turned the ball over on downs with 1:04 remaining.


BY THE NUMBERS:


* Cato Legaspi led Amherst on the ground with 29 yards on 4 carries, including a 22-yard run. Hill added 16 yards on 8 carries.

* Jackson Duncan had a strong defensive performance for Amherst with 10 total tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. Carson Skotak led the team with 13 tackles, while Matt Callahan added 7 tackles.
