CLINTON, N.Y. — Marek Hill threw four touchdowns Saturday and led the Amherst College football team to a dominant second-half performance in a 38-21 victory over the Hamilton Continentals at Steuben Field, improving Amherst to 2-0 on the young season.
Amherst used a balanced offensive attack and a timely defensive effort to overcome a halftime deadlock, outscoring Hamilton 24-7 over the final two quarters. The Mammoths finished with 462 yards of total offense and controlled possession for more than 36 minutes
Hamilton fell to 0-2. Next up for the Mammoths is a home date with Bowdoin on October 3 at 1 p.m on Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* With the score deadlocked at 14 at the half, Amherst seized control coming out of the break. The Mammoths opened the third quarter with a methodical seven-play drive that ended with Hill finding first-year wide receiver Cam Fowler wide open down the middle of the field for a 49-yard TD strike.
* After the Mammoths defense forced a Hamilton punt, Amherst struck again when Hill connected with Jack Berger on a 20-yard pass, extending the lead to 28-14. The TD strike to Berger capped an 8-play, 85-yard drive and was set up by a dynamic 13-yard run by Michael Dunmore.
* Hamilton managed to stay within striking distance early in the fourth quarter as Luke Kurzum hooked up with wide receiver Mitchell Ivatts for a touchdown, trimming the deficit to 28-21
* Amherst quickly delivered the decisive response as Dunmore punched in another score from 18 yards out, bouncing off a hard hit at the 10-yard line and dashing the final 10 yards untouched to the left side of te end zone. The score capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive, the third such drive of the day for the Mammoths.
*Junior Hudson Fulcher-Melendy later booted a 26-yard field goal to account for the 38-21 final.
* The Mammoths setting the tone for the day.. On Hamilton's opening possession and first play from scrimmage, Amherst defensive linemen Jackson Duncan intercepted a pass, setting up the game's first score. Just 46 seconds into the contest, Hill connected with Kai Erwin for a touchdown strike, giving Amherst a 7-0 lead.
* Hamilton responded midway through the first quarter when quarterback Kurzum engineered a scoring drive capped by a touchdown pass to Matthew Kearns, tying the game at 7-7.
* The Mammoths regained the advantage early in the second quarter. Hill directed a lengthy drive and found Max Alexander in the end zone for another touchdown reception, putting Amherst ahead 14-7.
* The Continentals answered before halftime. Kurzum led a nine-play, 74-yard march that concluded with a second touchdown connection to Kearns, evening the score at 14-14 with 6.1 seconds remaining in the half.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Hill was outstanding for Amherst, completing 25 of 34 passes for 306 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He also added 26 rushing yards. Wide receiver Christian Moore led the Mammoths with eight catches for 120 yards and a score, while running back Demitrius Smith contributed 70 rushing yards on 19 carries.
* For Hamilton, Kurzum threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns on 30-of-44 passing. Ivatts turned in a standout effort with 14 receptions for 147 yards and a touchdown, while Kearns added two touchdown catches.
* The difference ultimately came in Amherst's efficiency and ball control. The Mammoths converted key drives into points, posted 25 first downs, and amassed 462 total yards while limiting mistakes. Hamilton finished with 329 yards of offense but could not match Amherst's second-half surge.
* Matt Callahan led the Amherst defense with six tackles, five solo. Noah Onkst made five, all solo. Duncan made three tackles. had one interception and two additional pass break-ups. Josh Kuczynski had the Mammoths' lone sack of the game.
