SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- It was quite a fall for the Amherst College men's golf team and the Mammoths' punctuated that success last weekend with their third title in four matches played.
Thomas Zhang fired a final round 4-under Sunday at the Saratoga Spa State Golf Course, placing second individually and leading Amherst to a five-stoke victory over runner-up Trinity College.
The 17-team field featured some of the best Div. 3 the northeast has to offer. The two teams played two 18-hole rounds on Saturday before a final 18-hole round Sunday. In Saturday's early round, Amherst shot a collective 8-over 296 and were five strokes off the lead. But in the next 18, the Mammoths found their stride, finishing an amazing 6-under (282) and getting back to the hotel in first place at 2-over for the tournament.
On Sunday,
Thomas Zhang had four birdies and an eagle en route to his 4-under 68. Together with his 1-over 73 and his 1-under 71 on Saturday, that left him just one stroke off the individual championship and in second place with a 4-under 212. His eagle came at the fourth hole, a par-4, 403-yard challenge.
Andre Zhang was right in step with his teammate, finishing in third place at 1-under for the 72-holes. He came into play Sunday at 1-under and shot an even-par 72 with an incredible 14 pars and two birdies.
John Beskid and
Mark Vitels finished tied for 19th among the 99 golfer in the tournament. Beskid shot an even-par 72 on the final day. After a roller coaster ride over the first holes, he found his rhythm and registered par on the final 12 holes of the afternoon. Vitels opened the tournament with a 5-over in the first round, bounced back with a 3-under in Saturday's second round and shot a 2-over 74 in Sunday's final round. On Saturday, he recorded an eagle in both the first and second round.
Jan Ebbinge finished 3-over on Sunday and 6-over for the Tournament and
Ryan Powers, who played as an independent, shot 3-over Sunday and 17-over for the 72 holes.
