AMHERST, MA – After the ITA New England Regional tournament two weeks ago, the Amherst College women's tennis team was looking to finish its fall season strong, returning to competition on Friday as they took part in their final tournament of the fall season, the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT).

NEWITT was hosted by Amherst College and its Five College neighbor from Northampton, Smith College. The tournament gathered teams from all over New England, including several NESCAC rivals. NEWITT is played in Billie Jean King Cup format, in which two players from the same school are teamed up, and they play two singles matches and one doubles match. The team to win two out of three matches wins the round and advances. Amherst had five teams competing this weekend: Four in the A draw and one in the B draw. Last year, the Amherst duo of Katie Hart and Amy Cui won the A draw.

The Amherst five duos competing this year consisted of Tina She/Karolina Dobiecka as the No. 1 team, who were the ¾ seed in the A draw, Sophie Diop/Anwitha Duduka as the No. 2 team, Maddie Swire/Maya Muhunthan in the third spot, Sameera Talwar/Cody Huang in the fourth, and Rachel Roth/Katja Jules Viberg at the No. 5 spot, competing in the B draw. With Tina She and Karolina Dobiecka making a run to the semifinals of the A draw, the Mammoths concluded the fall season strongly and are looking to have a successful season of dual matches in the spring.

RESULTS HIGHLIGHTS:
  • On Friday, all five teams were in action, with two out of five teams advancing to the quarterfinals. The ¾ seed team of Tina She and Karolina Dobiecka faced Trinity College's No. 1 team of Allie Francis/Emilia Romano, prevailing and setting up a battle against MIT's duo of Saina Desphande/Anastasisa Samest.
  • In the B draw, Rachel Roth and Katja Jules Viberg went against Abby Hess and Kendall Skulley of Colby. The Mammoths were able to top the Mule duo and advanced to the quarterfinals.
  • In the quarterfinals on Saturday, sophomore Tina She and senior captain Karolina Dobiecka continued their roll as they bested the Engineer duo of Allie Francis and Emilia Romano. In the semifinals, the Amherst No. 1 team unfortunately fell to the #2 overall seed in the tournament of Sarah Youngberg and Leila Epstein of Wesleyan University.
  • In the B draw quarterfinals, Rachel Roth and Katja Jules Viberg also faced an MIT team, but this time, the Engineers prevailed, ending the run for the Mammoths.
