#16 Amherst suffer first NESCAC loss to #11 Tufts, 8-1

AMHERST, MA — The #16 Amherst College men's squash team suffered a setback at home on Friday evening. Facing the #13 Tufts University Jumbos on the Davenport Squash Courts, the Mammoths were defeated with a score of 8-1.

Up next: This result brings Amherst's season record to 7-4 overall (3-1 in NESCAC matches). The Mammoths will aim to bounce back on Sunday when they host another NESCAC rival, the #24 Bates College Bobcats, on the Davenport Squash Courts. The match is scheduled for 2pm ET. Bates enters the contest with an even season record of 3-3.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The longest match of the day came at the #3 spot between sophomore Joseph Toth for the Mammoths and Kerwin Teh. In a five-set marathon lasting an hour, Toth prevailed to win Amherst's only match of the day.  
  • Junior Grady Herbert fell in a five-set thriller to Rutva Samant. Herbert won the first two sets before Samant recovered to win with a score of 11-2 in the deciding fifth set. 
  • Sophomore Zi Tao Yu lost at the #2 spot to Aarav Gill in a match lasting 43 minutes. Yu showed signs of a comeback when he won the third set but Gill finished the match with an 11-8 win in the fourth set.
