SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Junior
Eliza Cardwell and sophomore
Allison Lounsbury earned All-New England honors to highlight action for the Amherst College women's track and field team on the first day of the New England Division III Outdoor Championships on Friday at Mount Holyoke College.
Cardwell finished third in the long jump with a leap of 5.53m to earn her 12th career All-New England honor between indoor and outdoor championships. Cardwell also qualified for the finals of the 100m hurdles, winning her heat in 14.42 seconds.
Lounsbury ran a season-best time of 37:52.76 in the 10,000m to finish fifth and earn All-New England honors for the second straight outdoor season after placing sixth in the 5000m last year.
In other action, sophomore
Morgan Rome placed 12th in the javelin throw with a mark of 35.51m and senior
Carolina Andrade was just behind with a throw of 34.20m.
With 6 of 22 events contested on Friday, the Mammoths tallied 10 points in the team standings to tie for 10th place out of 40 teams competing on Friday.
The New England Division III Championships continue on Saturday (May 4) at Mount Holyoke beginning at 10 a.m. A small contingent of Mammoths are slated to compete with Amherst's first event beginning at 11:45 a.m.
