#13 Amherst beat #22 Bowdoin in NESCAC Tournament Quarterfinals, 5-1

AMHERST, MA – Hosting the NESCAC Tournament, the #13 Amherst College women's tennis team welcomed the #22 Bowdoin College Polar Bears to western Massachusetts on Friday afternoon. In the Quarterfinals, the Mammoths downed the Polar Bears with a score of 5-1 to qualify for the Semifinals tomorrow.

Today's post-season win puts Amherst on a three-match winning streak and brings the team's season record to 13-5 (8-3 versus NESCAC opposition). Up next: the Mammoths have a short recovery before the NESCAC Tournament Semifinals tomorrow. At 1pm, Amherst will host the #8 Middlebury College Panthers with a place in the final on the line. 

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Amherst led 2-1 after the doubles match. First-year Lily Dounchis and Junior Deliala Friedman eased past their opponents at the #1 spot, while Juniors Amy Cui and Katie Hart won via a 7-2 tiebreak.
  • The singles matches were closely contested, with five of the six being stretched to three sets. 
  • Sophomore Sophie Diop and First-year Greta Stechschulte recovered from a set down to win their matches at the #3 and #5 spots respectively.
  • Junior Amy Cui was the only player in the contest to win in both singles and doubles.
