#22 Bowdoin overcome #19 Amherst with close 5-4 win

AMHERST, MA – On Saturday, the #19 Amherst College women's tennis team hosted their third opponent of the weekend, the #22 Bowdoin College Polar Bears, on their home outdoor tennis courts on campus. In a closely-fought match, the Mammoths fell to the Polar Bears with a score of 5-4.

Today's loss brings Amherst's record to 7-3 (2-2 in NESCAC). Up next: the Mammoths will play their only remaining non-conference match of the regular season on Friday afternoon. They will travel to Cambridge, MA, to face the #17 Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers at 3pm on the duPont Tennis Courts. 

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • In the doubles matches, First-year Lily Dounchis and Junior Deliala Friedman eased past their opponents at the #1 spot with an 8-1 win. However, strong Bowdoin performances at the #2 and #3 spots gave the Polar Bears a 2-1 overall lead heading into the singles matches.
  • Friedman then carried her momentum from the doubles into the singles, winning comfortably 6-1 6-2 at the #1 spot. Junior Amy Cui and Sophomore Karolina Dobiecka also earned singles wins for the Mammoths.
  • At the #5 singles spot, first-year Greta Stechschulte fought back from losing the first set to even the scoring at one set apiece, but fell just short in the third with a score of 6-3.
