Mammoths win two events, discus record falls again at Amherst Spring Fling

AMHERST, Mass. – Senior Adrian Friedman won the long jump and first-year Alec Kuzyk won the pole vault, while junior David Brown broke the school discus record for the second week in a row as the Amherst College men's track and field team hosted the Amherst Spring Fling on campus Sunday at the Neuhoff-Lumley Track, Hitchcock Field and the Coolidge Cage.

The Mammoths will be back in action next weekend, competing in the Coffey Invitational at Smith College on Friday and Saturday (April 12-13) and the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University on Saturday and Sunday (April 13-14).

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Friedman won the long jump with a mark of 6.74m, the first win of the season for the reigning New England Division III champion in the event.

* Kuzyk was the only pole vaulter to clear 4.45m, earning the first-year his first collegiate win.

* After breaking the Amherst record that had stood since 1962 in the discus last week, Brown bettered that mark with a throw of 47.06m for a new school record and finished second in the event. First-year Jacob Shine placed seventh in the event with a personal-best mark of 41.79m.

* Senior Benjamin Bell and sophomores Cody Pierce, Alexander Nichols and Jordan Harrison ran to a runner-up finish in the 4x100m relay with a time of 41.41 seconds, one of the top 10 times in Division III so far this season.

* Pierce and Nichols also ran personal bests in the 200m with Pierce finishing second in 21.80 seconds and Nichols placing fourth in 21.96 seconds.

* Senior Ian Dopp placed second in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:42.35 and first-year Harrison Talcott was just behind, finishing third in 9:47.01, as both Mammoths were competing in their first collegiate steeplechase.

* First-year Michael Abbey Jr. finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 13.78m in his first outdoor collegiate triple jump. Classmate Kaleb Barrett placed fourth with a personal-best mark of 13.45m.

* Sophomore Henry Dennen was the runner-up in the 1500m with a personal-best time of 3:55.61. First-year Stan Craig placed ninth in 3:57.99 and sophomore George Cahill was 17th in 4:01.72 in their first starts at that distance this season.

* A trio of Mammoths posted times among the top 40 in Division III so far this season in their first 800m race of the outdoor season. The reigning New England Division III indoor champion in the event, sophomore Ben Davis posted a time of 1:53.23 to finish third. Senior Kolya Markov-Riss clocked in at 1:53.41 to place fifth and sophomore Will Nagy finished seventh in 1:54.33.

* Sophomore Charlie Spurrell placed third in the hammer with a season-best throw of 53.13m. Junior David Brown placed fifth with a personal-best mark of 51.10m.

* Senior Gabe dos Santos cleared 1.97m on his final attempt to place fifth in the high jump, a personal outdoor best.

* Senior Alton Machen placed sixth in the 110m hurdles, winning his heat with a personal-best time of 15.21 seconds.

* Shine finished eighth in the shot put with a throw of 13.56m.

* Junior Jai Dreher ran a personal-best time of 50.43 seconds to place eighth in the 400m. Classmate Jack O'Hara was just behind, crossing in 50.70 seconds to claim ninth in his first 400m of the season.
