Abbey, Harrison win titles as Mammoths place second at NESCAC Championships

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Sophomore Jordan Harrison and first-year Michael Abbey Jr. won NESCAC titles as the Amherst College men's track and field team finished second at the NESCAC Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Tufts University.

The Mammoths tallied 151.5 points to match their best-ever finish at the conference championship. Host Tufts won its third straight title with 173.5 points.

Amherst posted 13 All-NESCAC performances, awarded to the top three finishers in each event, and senior Alton Machen broke the Amherst record in the 110m hurdles.

The Mammoths return to action next weekend for the New England Division III Outdoor Championships, which will be contested on Friday and Saturday (May 3-4) at Mount Holyoke College.

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Harrison successfully defended his crown as the fastest man in the NESCAC, running a time of 10.66 seconds to win the 100m dash for the second consecutive season after earlier running a season-best time of 10.63 seconds in the preliminaries.

* Abbey made his mark in his NESCAC Championship debut, winning the triple jump with a season best of 14.28m, a mark that ranks among the top 20 nationally in Division III this season. He wasn't the only Amherst first-year to earn All-NESCAC honors in the event as classmate Kaleb Barrett placed third with a hop, skip and jump of 13.83m, also a season best.

* Senior Alton Machen broke the Amherst school record in the 110m hurdles, running a time of 15.05 seconds to finish third and earn his first career All-NESCAC honor. Machen broke the record of 15.09 seconds that was set by Pat Hayes '03 in 2001.

* Senior Ian Dopp earned his first career All-NESCAC honor with his runner-up finish in the 3000m steeplechase. In the first season in which he has competed in the steeplechase, Dopp's time of 9:10.28 is among the top 20 nationally in Division III this season.

* The Mammoths claimed two All-NESCAC spots in the 5000m. First-year Stan Craig was the runner-up in his NESCAC Championship debut with a season-best time of 14:40.59 in just his second collegiate 5k on the track. Sophomore Henry Dennen earned his first career All-NESCAC award, finishing third in 14:46.08.

* First-year Harrison Dow was the runner-up in the 10,000m, finishing in a season-best 30:31.12 in his second collegiate 10k. Dow earned his second All-NESCAC award of his rookie year after earning the honor in cross country this fall.

* Sophomore Cody Pierce earned All-NESCAC honors in two sprint events with personal-best times of 21.48 seconds in the 200m and 48.44 seconds in the 400m to claim third place in both events.

* Sophomore Ben Davis notched All-NESCAC honors with a third-place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:53.35.

* Pierce, senior Benjamin Bell, junior Theodore Woodward and sophomore Jordan Harrison teamed up for an All-NESCAC finish in the 4x100m relay, finishing third with a time of 41.82 seconds.

* The Mammoths also garnered a third-place finish in the 4x800m relay with Davis, Dopp, senior Kolya Markov-Riss and sophomore Will Nagy clocking in at 7:43.51.
