Chen tied for second after first round at Williams Spring Invitational

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Junior Steven Chen is tied for second after shooting a 1-under 70 to lead the Amherst College men's golf team on the first day of the Williams Spring Invitational on Saturday at the par-71 Taconic Golf Club.

The Mammoths shot 300 (+16) as a team to sit in sixth place out of nine teams at the halfway point of the tournament. Trinity leads the field with a team score of 291 (+7).

Chen carded five birdies, including a run of four straight on holes 9-12, and was the best golfer in the field of 56 on par 4s at 2-under. Chen enters the final round one stroke behind the leader, Trinity junior Benjamin Boyd. Chen and Boyd are both reigning NESCAC co-champions as two of the four golfers who tied for medalist honors at the conference championship last spring.

Junior Teddy Freking carded a 4-over 75 to tie for 14th place. Senior Tommy Whitley shot a 6-over 77 to tie for 26th place. First-year Leland Tsai tallied a 7-over 78 to tie for 31st place.

The Mammoths return to the course on Sunday (April 21) for the final round of the tournament. Action begins at 10 a.m. with Amherst's tee times starting at at 11 a.m.
