Three Mammoths win field events, 5000m record falls as Amherst competes at Smith, Bucknell

Three Mammoths won events in the field and a school record fell on the track as the Amherst College men's track and field team was in action at two meets on Saturday, taking on local rivals in the Carla Coffey Invitational at Smith College and competing against some of the nation's best in the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell University.

Senior Adrian Friedman won the long jump, first-year Michael Abbey Jr. won the triple jump and junior David Brown won the discus at Smith, while sophomore Henry Dennen broke the Amherst school record in the 5000m at Bucknell in a meet that featured athletes from all three NCAA divisions.

The Mammoths will be back in action next weekend, traveling to MIT for the Collier Invitational on Saturday (April 20) at 11 a.m.

COFFEY INVITATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS:

* Friedman won the long jump for the second week in a row with a season-best mark of 6.96m. First-year Kaleb Barrett placed fourth in the event with a season-best mark of 6.60m.

* Abbey won his first collegiate outdoor triple jump with a mark of 13.49m, his first outdoor win after capturing the New England Division III indoor championship in the event. Friedman was seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 12.11m in his first outdoor triple jump of the season.

* Brown won the discus with a throw of 44.65m for his first win of the season and second career discus win. First-year Jacob Shine was fourth in the event with a mark of 41.16m.

* Sophomore Cody Pierce was the runner-up in the 400m run with a personal-best time of 49.25 seconds.

* Sophomore Jordan Harrison placed second in the 100m dash, running a season-best time of 10.88 seconds.

* Pierce also finished third in the 200m dash in 22.23 seconds, while Harrison won his heat and finished fifth overall in 22.33 seconds in his first 200m of the outdoor season.

* Three Mammoths finished among the top seven in the decathlon. Junior Alex Robin led the way, finishing fourth with 5149 points, including personal-best marks in the 110m hurdles (18.20), javelin (48.12m) and 1500m (5:09.10). Sophomore Zach Villegas placed sixth with 4896 points, including a personal-best discus throw of 31.27m. First-year Santi Benbow tallied 4830 points to claim seventh place in his first collegiate decathlon.

* Senior Alton Machen finished fourth in the 100m hurdles, running a time of 15.34 seconds. Junior Jai Dreher was seventh in the event, clocking in at 50.65 seconds.

* Senior Theo Dassin ran a season-best time of 15:12.25 to finish eighth in the 5000m.

* Senior Hugh Lemmon-Kishi placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 13.01m.

* The Mammoths tallied 107 points to finish fourth out of 11 schools in the team standings. Tufts won the meet with 195 points.

BISON OUTDOOR CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS:

* Dennen completed the 5000m in 14:28.51, a new Amherst school record that breaks the previous mark of 14:29.98 set by Dan Crowley '16 in 2016. Dennen finished 11th in a field of 104 runners. First-year Harrison Dow ran a time 14:34.24 in his first outdoor collegiate 5k to finish 22nd and sophomore George Cahill clocked in at 14:43.72 to place 39th.

* Senior Ian Dopp ran a personal-best time in his second collegiate steeplechase, finishing in 9:35.84 to finish 30th in a field of 67 runners.

* First-year Stan Craig notched a season-best time in his second 1500m start, finishing in 3:57.49 to place 66th overall.
