Mammoths double up on All-America accolades on first day of NCAA Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Amherst College women's track and field team earned All-America honors in two events with their performances on the first day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships on Friday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Junior Eliza Cardwell finished sixth in the nation in the long jump to earn First Team All-America accolades with a mark of 5.67m on the very first jump of the competition, becoming Amherst's first indoor All-American since 2020.

Amherst's distance medley relay team earned Second Team All-America honors with a 10th-place finish. First-year Zoë Marcus, junior Casie Eifrig, sophomore Piper Lentz and junior Julia Schor teamed to run a time of 11:47.49 in the event.

Cardwell also broke her own Amherst school record in the preliminary heats of the 60m hurdles, racing to a time of 8.60 seconds to rank sixth in the field and qualify for Saturday's final, which is scheduled for 3 p.m.

First Team All-America honors are awarded to the top eight finishers in each event with Second Team honors going to finishers 9-16 in individual events and 9-10 in relay events. All five Mammoths who competed today are first-time All-Americans.

Through the 6 of 17 events completed on the first day of the two-day championship meet, Amherst ranks 26th in the team standings with three points earned by Cardwell in the long jump. Loras has the early lead with 25 points.

The championships conclude on Saturday (March 9) with Amherst's only action coming in the 60m hurdles final at 3 p.m.
