Spurrell, Shine win events as Mammoths throwers open outdoor season at Swanson Spring Classic

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Sophomore Charlie Spurrell won the hammer and first-year Jacob Shine won the shot put as the throwers from the Amherst College men's track and field team opened the outdoor season at the J. Elmer Swanson Spring Classic on Saturday at Wesleyan University's Andersen Track.

The Mammoths return to action next weekend with a trip to Bryant University for the Black and Gold Invitational. The meet kicks off with the 10k races on Friday (March 29) with the rest of the meet taking place on Saturday (March 30).

MEET HIGHLIGHTS:

* Spurrell led a top-three sweep in the hammer, topping the field with a throw of 46.26m. Senior Hugh Lemmon-Kishi was second with a personal-best mark of 43.04m and junior David Brown placed third with a throw of 40.56m.

* Shine won the discus in his first collegiate start in the event. His mark of 37.38m topped the field, just ahead of fellow first-year Alex MacDonald, who recorded a throw of 35.56m to finish second.

* Brown notched top-three finishes in two events as he tied for second place in the shot put with a throw of 13.90m.

* Junior Alex Robin placed third in the javelin with a mark of 42.47m. Classmate Kevin Ryu was just behind with a throw of 39.63m and first-year Santi Benbow was the top rookie in the field, posting a mark of 39.40m in his first collegiate javelin competition.
